The sun is beating down at field #1 in Rocky Mount NC this fine Sunday afternoon. The 8U Blues have only two practices under their belt as a team and three wins so far this weekend. They have played great defense and managed to rally in each game on offense. And now it was their first chance to win a tournament this All Star season, and boy did they want it.
The West Chatham Heat who had just beat the 2nd seeded Roanoke Valley Fishers team was ready to play. The first batter his a hard line drive that Payton Green makes a great running catch on for out #1. The second batter hits a one hopper to Timothy at third who make a great throw to #16 Payton Bloom at first for out number two. One Heat player gets on with a hit up the middle that hits second base and takes a bad hop to the out field. One on, two away when the next batter hits a dribbler in front of the plate that the catcher #7 Jacob picks up and makes the throw to first for out #3.
But the Heat's defense was just as steady and the 8U's go three up three down in the bottom of the first.
Top of the 2nd 0-0
The Heats first batter of the inning hits a one hopper to Ryan at pitcher who connects the throw to Payton Bloom at first for out #1. The next batter gets on followed by a line drive catch by Garrett in center field. The 4th batter for the Heat hits one between 1st and 2nd that hits the edge where the grass and dirt meet, flying up hitting #8 Evan in the eye. With his eye swelling up and starting to darken Evan heads off to get some ice. The 5th batter hits one up the middle and makes it to first safely. Bases loaded, two outs and one black eye. No harm done though, because the next batter hits one between 1st and 2nd and Grayson makes the grab and runs to 2nd tags the bag for the force out and out #3.
#8 Evan, eye swollen and red takes his turn at the plate hitting a TRIPLE up the middle that the ball goes to the fence in center field. #28 Brian also hits a TRIPLE but to right center, scoring Evan. #14 Zach drops one in that bounces past the shortstop for a single, scoring Brian. David has out last hit of the inning laying a bunt and safely making it to first.
2-0 top of the third.
The first West Chatham batter gets on with a single to shallow left field, but the 8U's make quick work of the next three hitters. Grayson takes the first out with a line drive catch between 1st and 2nd, David takes care of out #2 when he catches a popup to the catcher, and Timothy has out #3 grabbing a one hopper at shortstop and running to tag 2nd base for the force out.
It is time for our offense to heat up.
#7 starts things off with a bunt hit, #11 follows with a bunt hit, #17 hits a single between second and third. Bases loaded no outs. #9 Payton Green hits up the middle scoring Jacob, but the heat get Ryan sliding in at second. Timothy hits a deep Sac Fly to center field scoring Grayson who tagged up at third and Payton moves to second. #98 Blake hits one to third beats the throw to first and Payton advances to 3rd base on the throw to first. #8 Evan hits a high pop up that lands between the pitcher and the catcher, he safely makes it to 1st and #9 Green makes it home. Guys on 1st and 2nd 2 outs when Brian Rubin his a single to right field which takes a bad hop on the outfielder and the slow relay in by the Heat allow Blake and Evan to score.
5 RUN RULE...heading to the 4th 7-0 West Raleigh Lead
And again the 8U's are able to have a 3 up 3 down inning in the 4th. Payton Green grabs a hard grounder at third making the throw to Bloom at first for out #1. #2 Garrett grabs a fly ball in center field for out #2 and Timothy makes a line drive catch at shortstop to end the top of the inning.
The Bottom of the forth will only see two WR hits. Garrett has a single to Right Center and Payton Bloom hits a double to center field. But the 8U's go scoreless in the 4th.
Top of the 5th 7-0 WR leads.
The Heats first batter his one between 1st and 2nd that #17 Pickles grabs and makes the throw to Garret at 1st for out #1. The second batter of the inning hits one back to Jacob at pitcher who had to try to make the throw around the Chatham pitcher who didn't move out of his way to Garrett who made a great reaching catch at first for out #2. The Heat get one on with a single up the middle. Ryan grabs a HOT ONE hit close to second, he makes the throw to Timothy covering second for the force out to end the top of the 5th.
#17 Ryan has a one out single with a hit up the middle, beating the throw to first. Payton Green has a line drive single to left field. #32 Timothy hits one into center field, Green is out at second sliding in but Ryan heads home for a run and Timothy makes it to second on the throw home in an attempt to get Ryan out at the plate. The W.Chatham Heat make the third out and we are headed to the sixth inning.
8-0 after 5.
The first two batters for the Heat get on, when the third batter hits one in foul territory on the third baseline that Blake runs in and makes the catch for out #1. The next better hits one between first and second that Payton Green gobbles up and throws to Timothy who is covering 2nd. TWO AWAY...The batter steps to the plate, swings, its high in the air, it's going back, it's going back it's...CAUGHT by #14 Zach Hurrand in right center field for out #3 to end the game.
The 8U's are now the Super NIT (Championship of Rings) Top Gun Gold Bracket Champions!!! The boys played amazing defense this weekend. It is hard to believe watch the Blue team play that this was their first tournament as a team and that they only had two practices to get ready for the weekend.
It was a twelve man effort this weekend and the boys played hard.
The 7U Blue team also had a great first weekend in Rocky Mount. They went 1-3 and were the 7th seed of the tournament making it to the Silver Bracket. With a tight first game on Sunday they followed it up with a 9 INNING game in which they were the home team and battled back multiple times to force the extra innings. Very impressive showing by our all 7 team in this 8U tournament.
Already looking forward to next weekend and some more ball.
Roll Blue Roll!!!
